01 / The calculation

How it works

Convert SAC to RMV. Multiply consumption by divers sharing gas and the ascent consumption multiplier. Integrate average ambient pressure on ascent at 30 ft/min (10 m/min), including a three-minute stop at 15 ft (5 m). Add the extra reserve. Turn pressure = (starting pressure + ascent/reserve pressure) ÷ 2, rounded up.

Keep in mind

An illustrative open-water model: no delay at depth, decompression, overhead, current, unequal cylinders or return-time imbalance. Defaults allow two divers at twice the entered consumption during ascent. A real emergency plan must account for the team's needs and conditions; the result is not a guarantee of sufficient gas.
